Did you make any New Year's Resolutions this year? I expect that a lot of you did and I'd like to help you to stick to them. I have been asked by some parents to 'sum up' my thoughts on the best way for children to achieve and create results at their gym club, school and in every day life. And, what personal techniques do I use to help me set and achieve my goals in life? Straight away my answer has to be sheer determination and a mindset to never give up...... BUT there is a bit more to it than that, so here's my guide for parents and children on how to keep your New Year's Resolutions.
Did you know that the 15th January is the cut off point. What does that mean? By the 15th January 95% of people have already broken their New Year’s Resolutions. Why is this? Well, most people choose a New Year’s Resolution that they would like to be able to stick to but they don’t really believe that they will be able to and they forget to review their feelings about it regularly and also fail to break the resolution down into smaller mini steps towards the achievement of the BIG resolution and before they know it, they’ve become demoralised, or forgotten and just given up. A lot of people don’t bother to make New Year’s Resolutions anymore as they have in the past and they know they won’t be able to keep them so to avoid the disappointment of breaking them they just don’t make them anymore. But there’s something about a new, fresh calendar year that makes us want to make a fresh start and be the person we always dreamt of being. The very best possible version of ourselves.

HOW TO ACHIEVE YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
So what would make you happy? We sometimes think that getting new ‘stuff’ or ‘things’ will make us happy, but then after a short period of time realise that it’s not the stuff that brings us true and real happiness. It might do for a few days, weeks or months, but it won’t bring lasting happiness. BUT, making a lasting change to our lives however, will. You’ve got to make a change and improve yourself. And the secret to happiness is ‘PROGRESS.’ It sounds simple and I’ve said it before and it’s also what we continually teach at Flair.
PROGRESS = HAPPINESS. Making progress will make you feel more alive and invigorated. I promise you.
So focus on something you really, really want. What excites you? If you say “I want to lose a stone in weight” that’s not really exciting and it probably conjures up images of starvation diets and gruelling treadmills. You have to have really strong reasons to do something that will push you through the tough times. It needs to be compelling. So, if it is a stone in weight that you want to lose, make clear pictures of your clothes being looser, your fitness levels and flexibility improving, the feeling of being lighter and healthier and how that is going to positively affect your life each and every day.
GROWING IN CONFIDENCE
Sit down and think about what it is that you really want and make it compelling enough that there’s no way you’re going to give up on this. Write it down, brainstorm it on paper, get it out of your mind and on to a real physical piece of paper. Internalise the positive feelings of how this is going to make you an even more awesome person and how you are going to make it a reality in this new and fresh year.
- Have a vision - What is it that you really want? and WHY?!
- Do you have strong enough reasons to make you follow through. Feel those reasons and write it down. And set the deadline date of when it is you are going to achieve this by.
- Make sure that you review it and feel it every day

In our Student Training Diaries we have a section called My Personal Goals where your children set themselves targets (with the help of their coaches) as we want to help them to reach their goals and as a by-product of reaching each goal your child will realise their personal PROGRESS, which will give them the feelings of happiness and confidence, because knowing that we have achieved and can achieve tells our mind that we are confident in our ability and this confidence is the magic ingredient to continued success. Confidence builds momentum and momentum towards our goals is the road to true success. To make this happen as part of your child’s weekly gymnastics journey we first find out what it really is that they want to achieve at their class and in the gym. Then we set a target date that we want to achieve this by (the deadline), then we set to work on keeping that goal real and each week work on small progressive steps towards the BIGGER goal. Writing the goal down allows the conscious goal that we have formed in the conscious part of our brain to embed into our subconscious mind. The power of writing is completely underrated in today's age of typing on a keyboard, but we are statistically more likely to achieve a written goal than a goal that we fail to write down. We are also more likely to achieve a written goal that has a set deadline. What we focus on, we get more of, so keeping this written goal in full view each week at class is key AND I also recommend reading out loud with your child their goals from their training diary on a daily basis. I personally do this with my goals and it really works! The trick to doing this is to read it in the present tense as if it has already been achieved... This is because the subconscious mind cannot separate fantasy from reality, meaning that you can literally trick your subconscious mind (which is the part of the brain that runs all of our programmes) into thinking that you have actually done what it is that you have set out to do, thus moving you faster towards its true attainment.
THE COACHES HELP THE CHILDREN SET GOALS IN THEIR DIARIES
I know this may sound a little bit ‘woo-woo’... But science backs this craziness and I’ve personally been successfully using this exact technique ever since I started my journey of training to become a stuntman back when I was 15 years of age so I am walking proof that it works.
When the goal is achieved, we then log that date in the Student Training Diary to see if it matches the target date. This helps to work out why and how we either reached the goal by the target date or if we missed the target what we can do next time to reach the goal by the set target date. This is a powerful foundational skill in always meeting a deadline, a skill that I am personally working on with some of our younger coaches where the school system has completely failed them.
